Canada dropped 19 rigs for the week ended Mar. 21, according to Baker Hughes data. With 180 rigs running, the count was 11 more than the 169 units drilling during the same period in 2024.
The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada fell by 21, dropping the count to 118 rigs for the week. Gas-directed rigs were up 1 unit to 61.
In the US, 593 rigs were working for the week, up a single unit from the prior week. The count was down 31 units from the 624 rigs working at the same time a year ago.
At 576 rigs working, the number of rigs drilling on land for the week was unchanged from the week prior. The number of rigs working offshore was also unchanged with 14 rigs running. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters last week increased by a single unit to 3 rigs working.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 1 unit from the week prior to 486 units working. The count was down 23 from the year-ago period. Gas-directed rigs were up 2 units to 102, but down 10 from the prior-year period.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Oklahoma increased its rig count last week by 2 to reach 53 rigs working. Louisiana increased its rig count last week by 1 unit to reach 30 rigs running.
The rig count in Texas fell the week ended Mar. 21 by 1 unit to reach 280 rigs working.
