Canada and the US both added to their respective rig counts the week ended Feb. 28.
According to Baker Hughes’s rotary rig count, Canada added 4 rigs to end the week with 248 rigs running. The count is up 17 from the number of rigs drilling during this period last year. In Canada, 177 rigs were drilling for oil, up 3 from last week. The number of gas-directed rigs also increased, up 1 from last week to 71.
In the US, the rig count ticked up a single unit, reaching 593 units working. This week's count is down 36 from the year-ago total of 629.
US land rigs were up 2 to 578. Offshore rigs decreased by 1 to 13, and those drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 2.
The number of US rigs drilling for gas increased by 3 to 102 this week, while the number of rigs drilling for oil fell by 2 to 486. Five rigs remained unclassified.
Rigs involved in vertical drilling were down 1 to 12 for the week. There were 48 US rigs drilling directional wells, down 1 for the week, while those drilling horizontal wells reached 533, up 3 for the week.
Leading the week's increase was Texas, up 2 units to 282 units working. Louisiana dropped a single unit to end the week with 29 rigs running.
