The rig count in Canada ended the week with an additional 16 rigs running. For the week ended Jan. 24, the rig count in Canada stood at 245 units, 15 more than were working this time last year, according to Baker Hughes data.
The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada stood at 174, 18 more than this time last week. Two fewer gas-directed rigs were running, bringing the count to 71 for the week.
In the US, 4 fewer rigs were running for a total of 576. The count is down 45 from the 621 rigs running in the US this time last year.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 6 units to 472, down 27 from this time in 2024. Gas-directed rigs increased by 1 to 99. A year ago, 119 units were drilling for gas.
The number of rigs drilling on US land was down 4 units to 560. The horizontal rig count is down 4 units to 511 for the week, while directional drilling is down by 1 unit to 51. Rigs drilling vertically were up 1 to 14 units. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged from last week at 14. Two rigs were drilling in inland waters, also unchanged from last week.
Texas saw the largest drop in rig count, ending the week with 4 fewer units at 277. New Mexico’s rig count fell by a single unit to 102. Oklahoma saw the only gain with a 1 unit increase to reach 44 rigs working for the week.
