Following a 25-unit loss last week, the rig count in Canada has fallen by another 71 rigs for the week ended Dec. 27, according to Baker Hughes data.

Following a 25-unit loss last week, the rig count in Canada has fallen by another 71 rigs for the week ended Dec. 27, according to Baker Hughes data (OGJ Online, Dec. 20, 2024).

With 95 rigs running in Canada, the count is still higher than the 86 units drilling this week a year ago.

The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada fell by 66, bringing the count to 44 rigs working for the week. Gas-directed rigs were down 5 units to 51.

In the US, 589 rigs were working for the week, unchanged from a week ago. The count is down 33 units from the 622 rigs working this time a year ago.

Rigs drilling on land in the US totaled 573, unchanged from last week. Offshore units remained unchanged at 14. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2.

The number of rigs drilling for oil and the number of rigs drilling for gas were unchanged week over week in the US with respective counts of 483 and 102. The oil-directed rig count is down 17 units from the 500 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. The gas-directed rig count is 18 fewer than this time last year. 

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, North Dakota saw the only increase with a 1-unit gain to hit 36 rigs working for the week. The rig count in Texas fell by a single unit to 284 this week.
