The rig count in Canada fell by 25 units to end the week with 166 rigs working, according to Baker Hughes data. For the week ended Dec. 20, there were 10 fewer oil-directed rigs working in Canada and 15 fewer gas-directed rigs, bringing the week’s totals to 110 and 56, respectively.

Despite the drop, the total rig count in Canada is up 20 from the 146 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US rig count remained unchanged this week with a total of 589 rigs working. The total is 31 fewer than the 620 rigs running in the US this time last year. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters, on land, and offshore, were all unchanged with respective counts of 2, 573, and 14. 

US oil-directed rigs increased by 1 unit this week to 483 but was down 15 units from the same period last year. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 1 to 102. A year ago, 120 units were drilling for gas.

New Mexico’s rig count dropped by 1 unit to end the week with 103 rigs working. Texas gained a single rig to end the week with 285.
