Canada rig count climbs, while US count dips

Canada's rig count increased this week, reaching 223 units working, up 5 from a week prior.

US drilling activity fell this week, according to Baker Hughes Inc.'s rotary rig count, released Friday. The US rig count fell 2 rigs, reaching 585 still working. This week's count is down from the year-ago total of 619 rotary rigs.

US land rigs were down a single unit to end the week with 566 rigs working. Offshore rigs also declined by a single unit. The count ended the week at 18. The number of rigs operating in inland waters was unchanged at 1, down 2 from the year-ago level.

Canada's rig count increased this week, reaching 223 units working, up 5 from a week prior. There were 5 additional rigs drilling for oil in Canada this week to reach 157. Two additional rigs were labeled unclassified, for a total of 3 rigs running. The number of rigs drilling for gas declined by 2 rigs this week to 63.

The number of US rigs drilling for gas increased 3 to 102 this week, while the number of rigs drilling for oil fell 5 to 479. Four rigs remained unclassified, unchanged from the week prior.

Leading the week's decline was New Mexico, down 3 units with 101 units still working. Louisiana and Oklahoma, both ending the week with 40 rigs running, dropped a single unit each this week.

Texas added 2 units to its count, ending the week with 279 working rigs. Pennsylvania added a single unit to end the week with 15 rigs working.
