The US drilling rig count dropped 2 units to reach 586 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 16, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 56 units from the 642 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land fell 2 units week-over-week to a total of 567 rigs running. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 0. The number of rigs drilling offshore also was unchanged, leaving 19 rigs working for the week.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 2 units from last week to 483. A year ago, 520 rigs were drilling for oil in the US. Gas-directed rigs increased by 1 unit to 98 but the count is down 19 from this time a year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, only Oklahoma saw an increase in rigs this week. With a 2-unit gain, the state ended the week with 37 rigs running. Texas and Ohio dropped rigs this week. Texas ended the week with 273 rigs running, a 3-unit drop from last week. Ohio dropped a single rig to leave 9 rigs working this week.
Canada’s rig count was unchanged from last week with 217 rigs working, 28 more than the count at this time a year ago. Four more oil-directed rigs were running this week for a total of 151. The count is up 32 from this time last year. Gas-directed rigs declined by 3 units to leave 66 working for the week. There were 4 fewer gas-directed rigs working this week than the same period a year ago.
