Canada adds 10 rigs this week; US count up by 1

Canada's rig count increased by 10 rigs to 223 working this week. The US rig count increased by a single unit.

Canada's rig count increased by 10 rigs to 223 rotary rigs working this week. That compares with 241 rigs working during the same period a year ago, according to Baker Hughes data. The increase follows weeks of double-digit gains (OGJ Online, Jan. 12, 2024; Jan. 5, 2024).

Canada’s gas rig count increased by 3 units to hit 83, while the oil rig count increased by 7 to 140.

US drilling activity was up slightly this week with a 1-unit gain to reach 620 rotary rigs working. Last year at this time, 771 rigs were working. In the US this week, 497 rigs were drilling for oil and 120 were drilling for gas.

Operations offshore and in inland waters were unchanged this week at 20 and 0 units, respectively. One additional rig was drilling on land to bring the total to 600 units.

Texas dropped 3 rigs to reach 305 units running this week, while Oklahoma dropped a single unit to 42. Pennsylvania gained 2 rigs to hit 21 working for the week. New Mexico, Louisiana, and Kansas all added 1 rig to respective counts of 98, 43, and 2.
