The rig count in Canada ended the week with an additional 39 rigs running. For the week ended Jan. 5, the rig count in Canada stood at 125, according to Baker Hughes data. There were 31 oil-directed rigs added in Canada this week and 8 additional gas-directed rigs, bringing the week’s totals to 58 and 67, respectively.
The total rig count in Canada is down 64 rigs from the 189 rigs working this time a year ago.
In the US, one fewer rig was running for a total of 621. The count is down 151 from the 772 rigs running in the US this time last year.
US oil-directed rigs increased by a single unit to 501, down 117 from this time in 2023. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 2 to 118. A year ago, 152 units were drilling for gas.
The number of rigs drilling on land decreased by 1 rig from last week to 601. Drilling rigs in inland waters and offshore were unchanged at 0 and 20, respectively.
There was little movement among the major and gas producing states. Kansas added its only rig, while Texas and Wyoming each dropped a single unit to reach counts of 308 and 12, respectively.
