The US drilling rig count dropped 6 units to reach 669 during the week ended July 21, data from Baker Hughes indicate. The report shows an overall decrease of 89 units from year-ago levels.
Offshore units were unchanged this week at 18 rigs. A total of 647 rigs were drilling on land, down 5 units from last week. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters fell by a single unit.
Rigs targeting oil fell 7 units to 530 for the week, down 69 from the 599 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-targeted rigs were down 2 units to 131. This time last year, 155 units were drilling for gas.
Among the major oil and gas producing states, Utah and Oklahoma saw rig count increases. With 15 rigs running, Utah is up 2 rigs from last week. Oklahoma gained a single rig to reach 40 working rigs.
Texas dropped 7 units to reach 322 rigs running. Louisiana’s rig count dropped by 2 to 49 rigs running.
The rig count is unchanged this week at 187 working rigs. This time a year ago, 195 rigs were working. Oil-directed rigs were up 2 units this week to 116, while those targeting gas decreased by 2 to reach 71 for the week.
