The rig count in Canada ended the week with an additional 38 rigs running—a consecutive double-digit increase. For the week ended Jan. 13, the rig count in Canada stood at 227, according to Baker Hughes data. There were 28 oil-directed rigs added in Canada this week and 10 additional gas-directed rigs, bringing the week’s totals to 141 and 86, respectively.
The total rig count in Canada is up 1 from the 191 rigs working this time a year ago.
In the US, 3 additional rigs were running for a total of 775. The count is up 174 from the 601 rigs running in the US this time last year.
US oil-directed rigs increased by 5 units to 623, up 131 from this time in 2022. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 2 to 150. A year ago, 109 units were drilling for gas.
The number of rigs drilling on land was unchanged from last week at 754. The numbers of rigs drilling horizontally and vertically were unchanged this week at 700 and 26, respectively. Three additional rigs were drilling directionally, bringing the count to 49.
New Mexico saw the largest gain. With a 3-rig increase, the state ended the week with 103 rigs running. Texas, Louisiana, and California each gained a rig to bring the respective counts to 379, 67, and 5.
Oklahoma’s rig count fell by 2 rigs to 64, while Colorado dropped a single rig to hit 20 rigs working for the week.
Three additional rigs were drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, pushing the overall US offshore count to 19. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2.
