Vår Energi ASA drilled dry wells at the Hubert and Magellan prospects in production license (PL) 917, 200 km northwest of Stavanger in 127 m of water, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate said in a release Feb. 14.

Well 25/7-12 S was drilled to respective measured and vertical depths of 2,241 m and 1,914 m subsea. It was terminated in the Sele formation in the Palaeocene. The well’s primary and secondary objectives were to prove petroleum in Palaeocene reservoir rocks in the Hermod and Sele formations, respectively.

The well encountered the Hermod formation with a total thickness of 34 m, of which 30 m were sandstone rocks of good reservoir quality. The well was dry.

Well 25/7-12 A was drilled to respective measured and vertical depths of 2,023 m and 1,962 m subsea. It was terminated in the Sele formation in the Palaeocene. The well’s primary and secondary exploration goals were to prove petroleum in Eocene reservoir rocks in the Balder and Horda formations, respectively.

The well encountered the Horda formation with a total thickness of 49 m, of which about 2 m were sandstone rocks with good to very good reservoir quality and with traces of gas. The Balder formation was encountered with a thickness of 85 m in total, of which about 11 m was a sandstone layer with very good reservoir quality. The Hermod formation was encountered with a total thickness of 36 m, of which 14 m was of very good reservoir quality and with traces of hydrocarbons.

The wells were the third and fourth in the license (OGJ Online, Oct. 24, 2023). Both wells have been permanently plugged.

Multiple discoveries have been made in this area in recent years. The local infrastructure includes Balder and Ringhorne East fields, operated by Vår Energi, and Grane, Svalin, and Breidablikk fields, operated by Equinor Energy ASA.

Vår Energi is operator at PL 917 (40%) with partners Aker BP ASA (40%) and Equinor (20%).
