US rig deployment continued to pick up during the week ended Feb. 10 as Baker Hughes Inc.’s tally of active units recorded its fourth consecutive weekly double-digit increase.
The overall count gained 12 units to 741, up 200 units over last year at this time. Units targeting crude oil were up 8 units to 591 this week. Those drilling horizontally also were up, gaining 11 units to 607 rigs working.
US land rigs gained 12 units to 717. Those rigs drilling in inland waters reached 3 units, up 1 from a week ago. Offshore rigs, reaching 21 units this week, were off a single unit.
Among major oil and gas producing states, Texas gained 7 units to reach 362 rigs working. New Mexico, at 50 this week, was up 4 units. Louisiana and West Virginia, both up 2 units, reached respective levels of 54 and 10. Pennsylvania, up 1 unit this week, touched 34 rigs.
Eight states were unchanged this week. These were Oklahoma, 102; North Dakota, 36; Colorado, 26; Alaska, 10; California, 6; Utah, 5; Arkansas, 1; and Kansas, 0.
Ohio and Wyoming, at respective counts of 19 and 18, were down 2 units each.
Canada’s rig count was up 9 units this week, reaching 352. This is up 130 units from a year ago. Oil rigs drilling in Canada reached 207, up 10 from last week, and those rigs targeting gas reached 145 units, down 1 rig from last week.
