TransCanada Corp. has filed a formal project application with Canada’s National Energy Board for the Energy East Pipeline, which is to carry as much as 1.1 million b/d of crude oil from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries and terminals in eastern Canada (OGJ Online, Mar. 6, 2014).
The $12-billion project involves conversion of 1,864 miles of TransCanada’s Canadian Mainline gas pipeline to crude oil service and the laying of 990 miles of new pipeline.
In related action, TransCanada also applied to the NEB to build and operate the Eastern Mainline Pipeline to carry natural gas in southern Ontario.
The $1.5-billion proposed project involves 156 miles of new pipeline in the high-demand Toronto-to-Montreal corridor.
TransCanada said the Eastern Mainline project will increase access to low-price natural gas produced in the US Northeast and, in combination with conversion to oil service of the Canadian Mainline, save shippers $950 million over 15 years in transmission costs.
