BHI: US rig count makes gains in Kansas, modest rise overall
The US drilling rig count edged up 2 units to reach 1,929 rigs working during the week ended Oct. 31, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Land rigs increased 3 units to 1,862 while rigs drilling in inland waters edged up 1 unit to 14. Offshore rigs decreased 2 units to 53.
Gas rigs jumped 14 units to 346, but that was almost offset by a 13-unit fall in oil rigs to 1,582. One rig considered unclassified came back online, representing the only unit of its classification this week.
Horizontal drilling rigs dropped 2 units to 1,353. Directional drilling rigs were unchanged at 211.
Canada one-upped the US during the week, boasting a 3-unit rise to reach 429. Oil rigs gained 5 units to 237 as gas rigs declined 2 units to 192. Canada now has 35 more rigs working compared with this week a year ago.
Major states, basins
Kansas claimed the largest increase of the major oil-and gas-producing states, increased its total 5 units to 26. Oklahoma was up 4 units to 208. Pennsylvania rose 3 units to 55. Louisiana edged gained 2 units to 112.
Unchanged from a week ago were North Dakota at 180, Colorado at 75, Wyoming at 61, California at 46, Utah at 23, Arkansas at 12, and Alaska at 8.
West Virginia and Ohio each lost 2 units to 42 and 34, respectively. New Mexico dropped 3 units to 100. Texas, last week’s leader with an 8-unit gain, relinquished 5 units to settle at 901.
A majority of Texas’s losses came in the Permian, which declined 6 units to 562, nearly eclipsing the 7 units it gained last week. The Granite Wash and Utica each fell 3 units to 59 and 46, respectively. On the plus side, The Mississippian rose 5 units to 78 and the Marcellus rose 3 units to 84.
