Details are emerging following an explosion and subsequent fire that occurred on June 15 at OAO Rosneft’s 7 million-tonne/year Achinsk refinery in Bolshoy Uluy District, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Eastern Siberia.
The explosion, which took place in a distillation column of the refinery around 7:53 p.m. Moscow local time, was followed by a fire that was contained by 9:05 p.m. and finally extinguished by 12:30 a.m. on June 16, according to a release from the Russian Federation’s Russian Emergencies Ministry (Emercom).
While Emercom confirms 12 people injured as a result of the blast, a final count of fatalities and injuries has yet to be confirmed.
Rescuers still at the accident site are attempting to cool down the plant’s impacted installation and remove debris, Emercom said.
Rosneft has not released any official information regarding a cause of explosion, the status of current operations at the refinery, or the extent of damage sustained by the plant.
