LONDON, Jan. 30 -- Maersk Oil North Sea UK Ltd. has discovered gas condensate in the high-pressure, high-temperature Culzean exploration well in the UK central North Sea.
The well was drilled on Block 22/25a and struck "a promising gas condensate column in reservoirs of Middle Jurassic to Triassic age," the company said.
Evaluations are under way to determine the size of gas volumes, commerciality, and possible development options.
Kurt Normann Nielsen, managing director of the company, said the Culzean well was an example of how a technology-driven approach can add new opportunities in the North Sea.
Maersk Oil's interest of 66% in Block 22/25a was acquired from BP in 2004. Its partners are Nippon Oil and Eni SPA, each holding a 17% stake.
